Planned labelling of rearing operations as a key step in animal welfare

Preparing agricultural animal rearing in Germany for the challenges of the future

A stated aim of the Federal Government, for which Federal Minister Özdemir has now presented the first key points for mandatory state labelling of rearing operations.

To counteract steadily growing economic pressure in animal rearing and take the interests of animal welfare and climate protection better into account, Federal Minister Özdemir has presented the mandatory state labelling of rearing operations as a central building block for future-proof agricultural animal rearing. The Federal Government is thus accommodating the trend of more and more consumers wanting to shop more consciously and wanting to know where they are getting their meat products from. The measures for the binding state labelling of rearing operations are to begin with pigs – in this case, consumers can find information about how animals are treated based on five different forms of rearing.

But the new measure is not only intended to give consumers more assurance, but should also give farms the planning security they urgently need to enable them to make long-term and sensible investments in their products. Agricultural operations that want to convert their stalls to improve animal welfare are also to receive support.
